Structured Literacy

Structured literacy emphasizes and focuses on the explicit and systematic teaching of literacy. The five pillars of reading--phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, include both foundational skills as well as higher-level literacy skills.

Introductory & Intermediate Instruction

Introductory Instruction:

Using the Orton Gillingham approach, students are taught beginning reading. Beginning reading includes phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling of single-syllable words.

Intermediate Instruction:

The Orton Gillingham approach is used to teach multisyllabic words. Students increase phonemic and morphological awareness, learn advanced phonics and develop morphological word work, which enhances vocabulary and improves reading comprehension.
